View Article  Goodbye 2008
This year held many emotions for me ranging from good to bad to ugly. So with 2008 leaving us tonight, I just wanted to take a quick look back at the year that was.

January
Welcome to New York Johan Santana! In what was by far the biggest off-season move for the Mets, the two-time Cy Young Award winner graced us with his presence in Queens and made Yankee fans everywhere cry.

February
The slow season, but the Giants winning the Super Bowl was a great distraction. Check out the Mets Heads coverage of the parade, etc.

April
We took off March here, but came back in April in time for the final Opening Day at Shea Stadium:

"I have been to the last couple opening days, and this one was a bit different from the rest.  It wasn't the last game at Shea, but being there for its final season sparked many memories such as my first game with my dad, and spending many a Sunday in the mezzanine."

I also went to Wrigley to see the Mets play the Cubs...and came back the same day.

May
Mets at the Movies sucked, and was much better the first time around.

June
Willie was rightfully fired, and the Gangsta era kicked off.  I tried to warn the Mets to get out of their own way, but apparently it wasn't enough.

July
Ah, the dog days of summer. Chase Utley showed he had no class at the All-Star Lame. I also caught the second to last play at Shea by Billy Joel which was really great from the little I can remember.

August
Blogger Day at Shea was awesome, and I was in a suite there for the first and last time.

September
My postseason tickets came, or as I have come to call them, the annual jinx, and I was banished to the far reaches of the upper deck despite buying them within minutes of them becoming available. I attended what was to be the last game ever played at Shea Stadium and never got to use those tickets after all.  Here are my final thoughts on that mess. The month was highlighted by the Mets bringing on new third base coach Razor Shines.

October-November
Hibernation

December
Any lead after the seventh inning is now safe thanks to K-Rod and J.J. Putz. Every time I hear Thunderstruck by AC/DC I get excited for 2009. However, we did bid adieu to the loveable Venezualan rockstar, Endy Chavez. Interviewing the original Mr. Met, Dan Reilly was a step back into the past and I also received my Tom Seaver signed seat back as well.

Overall, this year held a season of discontent for me. I felt more upset at how the team played than I did satisfied with their wins.  It never felt like they were playing to the level that I thought they could have been in 2008. The injury to Billy Wagner started the bullpen debacle that made the Keystone Cops look like a bunch of consummate professionals, and the Mets weren't able to recover. Omar has been making the moves that are necessary to help the team in 2009, and he isn't done yet as Derek Lowe was just offered a contract yesterday.

As soon as this season was over I turned the page because I never was of the mind that this season was "meant to be."  You might think that is losing faith, but that's not true. I just held the team to a higher standard than the one they performed to. The 2007 season took me about 3 months to get over, if I even have. I am looking completely forward now, and am excited for next season, even if Citi Field will undoubtedly extract mucho dinero from my pocket.

Happy New Year everyone!

View Article  Fantasy Season Finally Over
There are few days I enjoy more every year then when my fantasy season, whether it be football or baseball, is over.

After every season I tell myself I won't play again, but usually do. It's like telling myself I will only have one drink when I go to the bar - then come home at 4 am.

I hate secretly hoping the defense playing the Giants will hold them to 3 points, yet lose 2-3. The stress of game-time decisions that either make or break a win that week is really not worth it.  I miss just having wings and casually watching whatever game is on without caring about the outcome unless it affects the G-Men.

The Forest Hills Pheasants were carried, literally, to a 3rd place victory by DeAngelo Williams who has been responsible for many of my 10 wins, so thank you DW. Yahoo! Sports pays tribute to those who lost to DeAngelo this year.

A few 'screw you's' I'd like to hand out though:

Darren McFadden - I could have stood out on that team
Matt Hasselbeck - every Seahawk for that matter
Frank Gore - why go down when I needed you most

Anyways, just glad it's over, and who needs the Mets and their hot stove when the Giants have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. At least for now.

View Article  Goodbye Endy
In what I feel is a fair trade all around, we are bidding adieu to Endy Chavez.

Known most for "The Catch" in the Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, Endy was certainly a fan favorite and it is sad, although timely, to see him go.

Endy has played for the Royals, Expos, Nationals, and Phillies before coming to Queens. Who knew we were inheriting a Venezuelan Rockstar.  He tracked down every ball, ran out every hit, and did it all with that milky smile. You will be missed Endy.

For old times sake:

View Article  Q&A with Original Mr. Met
(recently posted on Metsblog)

Recently, I sat down with Dan Reilly, the original Mr. Met.

Our conversation was truly a step back into Mets history, and thanks to Mr. Reilly’s first person accounts, I felt like I had been there myself.

Reilly’s new book, “The Original Mr. Met Remembers: When The Miracle Began,” is a must read for Mets fans of any age and can be found at iUniverse.com.

Regis Courtemanche: "So I have to ask, were you allowed to talk when in costume?"

Dan Reilly: “No, no, the Mets just wanted me to wave alot and go up to all the kids. I could never take the head off or anything. I even walked the entire Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade alongside Elsie the Borden’s Cow with that head on.”

RC: Was it hot in there?

DR: Oh, it was terrible (laughs). I have no idea where that head is now but would like to.

RC: Whose idea was it to have a mascot?

DR: We always had the cartoon character Mr. Met in the Polo Grounds, and it carried into Shea Stadium. I was an usher then, and also sold tickets - which we actually counted - at Grand Central for Bob Mandt... Tom Meany, the Mets first PR Director noticed so many kids at the games, and thought we should have a live Mr. Met. So, him and Jim Thompson called me into the office and I thought it was curtains. They asked if I’d be interested. I said I don’t dance or anything but ‘yeah, I’m game.’ In May of ‘64, we picked a doubleheader against the Giants and I came out in the second game.

RC: What was the inspiration for the book?

DR: Well, I love sharing stories and memories. My wife then really pushed me to do the book. Everyone said, just write down a story here and there, and eventually you’ll have a book. And eventually, I did. Regis, I have so many stories from back then I could probably write a few more. I feel like if we hadn’t won in ‘69 though, no one would remember us. That’s why I wrote the book.

RC: What was the vibe in the clubhouse like back then?

DR: Such a great group of guys, I really miss them. Everything was a party. Three-game winning streak? That’s a party. One night, Tug [McGraw] just beat Sandy Koufax and we were supposed to meet up with the guys at the Diamond Club to celebrate. Well, the World’s Fair was occuring right in the park, and Tug really wanted to go to the Irish Pavillion first. I could see trouble coming and needless to say, we never made it back to Shea.

RC: Who were your best friends on the team?

DR: They were all really great, but Tug and Swoboda.  I lived with Swoboda, Kranepool, those were my guys.  I miss them a lot.

RC: What were your best and worst moments?

DR: Oh no worst, no worst. But I really liked Christmas time. We’d all visit the hospitals and say hi to everyone. I can recall the highlights of every year I worked with the Mets from ‘64-’73. I was Mr. Met for three.

RC: How do you feel about Shea being replaced.

DR: Well, it’s sad. That was home, we were there easily 16 hours a day. Baseball’s much bigger now. It was a small organization then, everyone knew and liked each other. I miss those days and hope some of them miss me.
