View Article  Vietnam Trip Humbles Graves
Tracy Ringolsby at the Rocky Mountain News discusses former Mets reliever Danny Graves' trip to Vietnam.

Ringolsby writes:

"Graves was born in Vietnam, although he left when he was 14 months old, shortly before the fall of Saigon. It wasn't until 30 years later, in January 2006, that Graves returned."

"I realize how spoiled we are over here, especially major league ballplayers," Graves said. "The people in Vietnam have absolutely nothing and they are happy."

During the off-season, I like hearing news other than just predictions and concerns for the upcoming season. As horrible as Graves was with the Mets, it's good to hear about his new found perspective and can only hope that other players value being in the majors as much as he seems to.

View Article  Guillen Rips Phillips
In an article for the Chicago Sun-Times, Joe Cowley reports that Chicago White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen is not too happy about former Mets GM and current ESPN "analyst" Steve Phillips' latest remarks regarding Guillen being on the "hot seat" in terms of losing his job.

The ever outspoken Guillen remarked:

"I have a better record than his manager [Bobby Valentine] did with the Mets. I have a better record as a manager than [Phillips] when he was the Mets' general manager."

"We pick better players than he did back then. He forgot about when I was with Atlanta and he was the general manager [of the Mets] and we beat him. He forgot I was the guy who hit the base hit to right field to win the game."

As much as I hate how arrogant Guillen is, I like taking the opportunity from time to time to sacrifice my objectivity in order to hate on Phillips, even if Guillen's remarks are outlandish and irrelevant.

         **METS FUN FACT**

In 1966, the Mets chose not to select Reggie Jackson with the first overall pick. Instead, they took Steve Chilcott, a catcher who would never make it to the Major Leagues.
