According to
ESPN.com,
Pete Rose has admitted to betting on the Cincinatti Reds "every night" while he was manager of the team.
Rose as quoted by ESPN:
"I bet on my team every night. I didn't bet on my team four nights a week. I was wrong."
"I
bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in
my team, I did everything in my power every night to win
that game."
ESPN also notes:
"Rose accepted a lifetime ban for gambling in 1989, but denied
for nearly 15 years that he bet on baseball. He finally
acknowledged in his latest autobiography, published in January
2004, that he made baseball wagers while he managed the Cincinnati Reds."
The
Chicago Tribune also covered the story.
I have always been torn on the subject of whether or not he should be accepted into the Hall of Fame. His on the field history should absolutely be recognized somehow regardless of his betting on baseball. Although this wouldn't be noted in his Hall of Fame stats anyway, his managerial history obviously worries me the most and if he is accepted into the Hall as I believe he should be, an asterisk should be attached to his name.
Rose to me is like a little kid who got caught shoplifting, who when asked if he has anything in his pocket says "Noooo", but then a candy bar falls out of his sleeve. Hard to ever trust someone who keeps providing more "truth" as time goes on.

Update...There are now reports that Rose didn't bet on the Reds everynight, just most nights...sheesh.
Thanks to BMF for the hilarious pic by the way.
