View Article  Wagner Adds Splitter
Marty Noble at MLB.com reports on the Mets bullpen, including Billy Wagner and his addition of the split-finger fastball to his repertoire.

Noble notes:

"Wagner is working on developing a split-finger fastball, a pitch designed to complement his normal four-seam fastball and, more to the point, enable him to reach the end of the season -- whenever that might be -- with fuel still in his tank."

"With an expression of consternation, Wagner acknowledged on Wednesday that 'I had nothing left when we went to St. Louis.'"

View Article  Alou's Diet Secret
In an article for Newsday, David Lennon discusses, amongst other things, Moises Alou's secret for keeping fit:

"Alou doesn't credit any miracle diet or magic elixir for his ability to remain one of the game's most accomplished hitters at the age of 40. He doesn't scarf down egg whites by the dozens like Julio Franco. Or run beyond the brink of exhaustion like Orlando Hernandez."

"His secret? Alou counts the calories on the side of a 12-ounce can."

"'I drink light beer.' he said."

You and me both Moises.

View Article  Hats Off To Ya
The Associated Press reports that on Opening Day, MLB will replace the traditional wool cap in favor of a new polyester blend model designed to wick away sweat before it can stream down a player's face.

The key is the new cap's ability to absorb sweat so that it can quickly evaporate.

This is the first major overhaul of the baseball cap since the current six-panel model was adopted in 1954.

Glad to see those salty, sweat lines go away.

         **METS FUN FACT**

In 1966, the Mets chose not to select Reggie Jackson with the first overall pick. Instead, they took Steve Chilcott, a catcher who would never make it to the Major Leagues.
