Marty Noble for MLB.com writes about the Mets' benchwarmers in his last in a series of weekly stories on MLB.com examining each Major League club, position by position.

According to Noble, even with their talent, the Mets keep their bench warmer than most clubs, rarely deploying their replacements into action.

Noble writes:

"The 2006 Mets made the fewest pinch-hitting appearances in the National League, the sixth-fewest pitching changes and the sixth-fewest defensive changes."

Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro, David Newhan, Damion Easley, and Julio Franco are decent reserves to have, but according to Noble if history repeats itself, they won't get their uniforms too dirty in 2007.

View Article  Duaner's Road to Recovery
In an article for the NY Times, Ben Shpigel reports on the recovery of Duaner Sanchez.

Shpigel writes:

"Long after everyone else left Tuesday to wash their trucks or to work on their chip shots, Duaner and Pedro were the two players still in the locker room at the Mets' spring training facility, the star starter and the key reliever, seeking to defy expectations."

"General Manager Omar Minaya said last Thursday that he expected Sánchez to be ready to pitch on opening day in St. Louis, and Sánchez did not dispel that notion Tuesday."

View Article  Happy "Valentine's" Day

Brian Johnson at The Daily Targum, Rutgers' newspaper appropriately writes about the man that is Bobby Valentine.

Johnson writes:

Did you know Bobby Valentine is credited as the inventor of "the wrap" by many? And who doesn't love the wrap?

Valentine put "a sandwich wrapped in tortilla" on the menu of his restaurant Bobby V's in Stamford. If you don't believe me - his idea was credited on the Food Network (the most valid of all sources pertaining to food).

I did NOT know that...funny stuff.

View Article  Pedro Optimistic But Cautious
Ken Davidoff from Newsday spoke with an optimistic Pedro Martinez in Port St. Lucie yesterday.

Martinez as quoted by Davidoff said:

"I'll probably be better than people have seen at Shea. According to what the doctors say, I should be coming back stronger and throwing harder."

"I was ahead of schedule two weeks after the surgery," Pedro said. "Everything went really well. But the thing is there was a piece of bone taken out. My physical shape and range of motion -- it's all there." "

"If you ask me about that, I could throw now. But taking the ligaments off the bone again would be devastating. That would be it."

Don't push it Pedro, noone wants to see you go out with a fizzle!

         **METS FUN FACT**

In 1966, the Mets chose not to select Reggie Jackson with the first overall pick. Instead, they took Steve Chilcott, a catcher who would never make it to the Major Leagues.
